Sculpting with Air and Light
Learn about translating 2-dimensional patterns, sketches and concepts into 3-dimensional living, breathing sculptures and create your own illuminating, inflatable installation.

- Duration: 1 or 2 day options are available
- For students (age 16+), professionals, artists, craftsmen and people interested in creating abstract inflatable sculptures

Introduction to Inflatable Architecture
Participants will learn about the basics of inflatable architecture and design through hands-on experiments and large-scale prototyping.

- Duration: 1 or 2 day options are available
- For college/ university students of art, design, engineering or architecture

Advanced Inflatable Architecture
Participants will learn about inflatable architecture through lectures, hands-on experiments, and prototyping. Design and simulation techniques are explored, and participants will build their own large-scale architectural prototypes.

- Duration: 2 up to 5 day options are available
- For college/ university students of art, design, engineering or architecture

Pneuma Polis
Participants are challenged to create a labyrinthic, pneumatic town in less than a day. Separate groups will discover how their design impacts their neighbor, and how the entire Pneuma Town is interdependent.

- Duration: 4 hr. to 1 day options are available
- For groups of students, professionals and business-teams

Learn how art uses the forces of motion and gravity by using a technique that exchanges a paint brush with a swinging pendulum. The process results in a symmetrical abstract work of art created using solely natural forces.

- Duration: 4 hr. to 1 day options are available
- For families, junior high students, high school students, artists, craftsmen and people with a general interest in fine arts

Fluid Art
Fluid Art combines chemistry with fine art by mixing various materials and pouring it onto a canvas. Acrylic paints react with each other when combined together to make interesting and visually organic motifs. A small gas-burner is used to add final touches.

- Duration: 1 day
- For families, junior high students, high school students, artists, craftsmen and people with a general interest in fine arts

Rhino 3D Design & Laser Cutting
Participants will master the basics of working with Rhinoceros design software, using their own laptops and a free trial version of the software. They will be guided through the aspects of 2D drafting, printing, and 3D modelling. Optionally, a module can be added to this workshop allowing students to create and laser cut their own designs.

- Duration: 1 and 2 day options are available
- For students and professionals in the field of design, architecture and engineering, as well as artists, craftsmen and people interested in learning to work with the Rhinoceros 3D software

Architecture & Engineering Workshops

Space Architecture 101
Step into the shoes of a Space Architect and learn how atmosphere, gravity, geometry and space-travel affect the design of extra-terrestrial and inter-planetary architecture. Through hands-on experiments you will learn about, and build, a Martian habitat prototype.

- Duration: 3 hrs. or full-day options are available
- For families, junior high students, high school students

Introduction to Membrane Architecture
Especially in hot climates, the demand for lightweight membrane structures is fast-growing. The elegant geometry and minimal structural approach to these modern age tent-like-structures make them especially appealing for covering large outdoor spaces, or as intricate sculptural objects.

- Duration: 1 or 2 day options
- For students and professionals in the field of architecture and engineering, as well as artists, craftsmen and people interested in lightweight and membrane architecture

Pavilion Prototyping
Pavilions often represent an ephemeral type of architecture, well suited for experimentation and the exploration of artistic concepts. Through the use of common objects and mundane materials, an architectural assembly will be created that serves as a prototype pavilion for placemaking.

- Duration: 3 up to 5 day options are available
- For college/ university students of art, design, engineering or architecture

Dynamic Facade Prototyping
This extensive workshop focusses on the building-envelope as a responsive skin. Students will test, prototype and engineer mock-ups for dynamic facade elements that interact with and respond to their environment.

- Duration: 3 up to 10 day options are available
- For college/ university students of art, design, engineering or architecture

Inspiring Venue

Architects of Air

Consider booking a luminarium or a lumini.

We have had the pleasure of hosting several workshops in collaboration with Alan Parkinson and Architects of Air. Their luminaria are beautiful, immersive light sculptures. Designed for people to enter and to be moved to a sense of wonder at the beauty of light and color.

Some of our workshops are well suited to be hosted inside a lumini, or as a side-event to hosting a luminarium.
